St Mary’s College Additions
A playful addition to a prominent heritage streetscape, addressing the city
IDW were invited to prepare a submission for a new building on the St Mary’s College campus. On reviewing the brief we were convinced that the siting of the project would reduce the little outdoor space remaining and add to the dislocation of classrooms and teaching spaces that existed across the steeply sloping site.
Our submission proposed an alternative approach suggesting three additions to existing buildings and re-configuration of existing internal spaces to provide current linked teaching space and flexible learning outcomes. Double stacking over existing building elements maximises both outdoor playground areas and indoor general learning areas.
The college community identified with this approach and IDW have managed the construction of an early learning centre, upgrades and additions to the primary school classroom block, relocation of cookery and facilities for music and drama including alterations and upgrades to St Peters Hall. The works also included a new entry to the school and street front upgrades along with the provision of redeveloped external teaching and play spaces.
