Taroona House

3 level house that stands apart from its neighbours

The clients for this new house project came to us very excited about their bargain land purchase. The previous owner had excavated a significant portion of the site creating a 4m high rock face separating the front from the back of the site.

This posed a challenge and became the driver for the concept of this 3 level house. The idea was to lift the house above an under-croft parking area and then build a modest 2 storey timber framed house on top.

At the upper level the house bridges back reconnecting access to the upper part of the site. External decks and terracing of the steep slope provide ample outdoor living spaces with spectacular views of the mouth of the Derwent river. Entering the house at the first floor internal stairs connect the bedroom level from the upper living level and continue on to the laundry and family wing at the rear. The house stands apart from its traditional suburban neighbours because it’s just that bit different and the owners are happy about that too.
